As I was driving across the prairies to my old college town, I realized that it had been almost 9 years exactly since I had loaded up my belongings in my parents van and drove out to Caronport.
Let me back up a bit. Recently Thomas and flew out to Regina, Saskatchewan, then Rented a car and drove the hour west on the Trans Canada 1 highway, to Caronport; Home of Briercrest College (when I went their it was Briercrest Bible College, they had to drop bible in the name for accreditation reasons, but not in the curriculum). I went to go see My best friend Melissa get married (for more back story on Mel, please see blog archive in May/June of 2010).
Where is Saskatchewan You ask?? It is in the middle to be exact. A lot of people call it the armpit of Canada. It is east Of Alberta and BC, and west of the rest. Southern Saskatchewan is Prairies, just prairies, that's all there is Prairies. Saskatchewan is the one place in the world where you can see both ends of a long train, (that is a mile away) at the same time, (not kidding).
Caronport is a little Town, it is technically not even a town it is a village. the town consists of a Bible college, seminary, private high school, and a k-8 school. There is a Hotel, a gas station/coffee shop/ subway restaurant. There are no Traffic lights, but there is one RCMP, and police cruiser. The Big town of Moose Jaw is 15 minutes away, and the big city of Regina, the capital, is an hour east.
More to the point of My story, I went out to see Melissa and James get married. The trip went really well. Thomas did wonderful on both plane rides. When I finally got to Caronport, Mel was waiting for me outside the Hotel! Mel Proposed that we have a sleepover in my hotel room that night. I warned her that Thomas didn't sleep through the night yet. She was fine with that. Unfortunately Thomas did not want to sleep at all, and I ended up having a pace the floors night until 3am, with Mel right there. Lets just say no one got a lot of sleep that night. Which was hard on me, hard on the bride, and we were all ready for Bed the next night.
The next day, Mel left my hotel early to do wedding prep, I took my time getting ready, and then went over to the Plant's House. The Plant Family, have let Mel live with them the last year and are a wonderful and gracious family. I went expecting to help decorate the Wedding cupcakes, but when I got there Mel said "can you drive Me to Moose Jaw?", "Sure". We had to go to Moose Jaw to order the top of her wedding cake. We quickly buzzed into town to order the cake and came right back. Later on the night We had a little Stagette (bachlorette) night for Mel at the Boston pizza. This was a low key party, but we did manage to get Mel a little Drunk, with a few drinks and a muffdiver shot.
Friday morning was spent Decorating the Reception hall. The part that was funny was the groom, Best man and I TRYING to fold napkins. We folded and re-folded, and Ron the MC who was our teacher ended up doing like 80% of the seats. Rather funny. (note: anytime you go someplace and see a lovely folded napkin, really think about how much someones clammy hands have touched that napkin you will wipe your mouth with.) The rest of the day, I spent shopping around Moose Jaw, and going to the rehearsal dinner. A lovely dinner at the Plant's House.
Saturday!!! the Big day!! I got up and dressed and went over to the Plants' home where the Bridal Party was getting ready. Emily, one of the Bridesmaids, was a hair dresser and was very Busy doing all the girls hair. The morning was so much fun; we were joking, laughing and singing!!! Very Much Like My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Then we were off to the Church. I almost went to the wrong wedding. No kidding, Niki the brides sister, had given me directions and told me the church is on the left of the street. I turned up the road and there is a church on the left with a decorated Vehicle, flowers carried in... I parked and got out, and I look at the church name, Not First Free Methodist. so I turned to some girls in the parking lot, and asked who's wedding they were going to, their Answer "Vanessa's". So I hopped back in my car and head farther up the road, find First Free Methodist in Plenty of Time. The Bride was breathtaking, the Music Beautiful and the Vows were wonderful and heartfelt. Back to Caronport for a lovely reception. Then we had to say goodbye to Melissa and her Groom, with many a tear, as I have seen how much she has grown.
The Next Day we had to pack and head home. The Grooms parents also stayed in the same hotel and his Mother Just loved babies, so she considered it her job to hold Thomas while I ate breakfast in the morning. Which was very nice, and the morning I had to pack, she held him for an hour plus, just so I could get some things done.
Then we headed to the airport and back home safe and sound!!
Sorry- Interenet doesn't want to let me publish pictures right now, so they will come in a day or so.
