First Date

Okay so it was over 2 months ago that I promised you the story of Joel and my first date. So you are all up on how Joel and I met and how he asked me out, if not, go back to archive of March Blog posts.

So the Date was set for that Evening, dinner and Ice skating. So the question on the table was "What to wear". I called my good friend Colleen to tell her about my date and ask what I should wear. This turned into about 3 Phone calls with a consult from our friend Laura who was over at Colleen's. Since I was certain that with Ice skating, I didn't want to be too dressy, we decided on khaki pants and my striped sweater that resembled a tube of lifesavers. I even went out to the living room a time or two to consult my mom and sister on shoe choice.

I can't remember what time we had decided he would pick me up, but I do know he was late!! This was not uncommon for first dates, as my house was a little hard to find. Even when I gave them good directions, on more than one occasion I had had guys call and say "where do you live again". So I give them a little allowance. Too be honest, I don't remember if Joel called asking for directions again or not. Finally the Doorbell rang! I raced to the door, hoping to get out the door before the Spanish inquisition, AKA my parents, got there. No such luck they were on to my tricks. I opened the door and there was Joel, dressed in jeans and a red flannel shirt, suspenders and a baseball cap, his jeans even had grass clippings on them from the yard work. I seriously looked at him, then down at what I was wearing, then back at him. Okay so maybe my casual not dressy outfit, was a little too dressy, oh well can't change now. My dad in the mean time introduced himself and told him to treat me like one of his sisters, and too also have 911 on speed dial, because of a previous incident that happened on a date at the Ice rink, where I ended up at the ER with 10 stitches in my chin (but that is another Blog). The round of Questions and instructions had lightened up a a bit, since I was now in my second year of college is my guess.

We were off, Joel drove a that point a large international truck with a dump box on it. Although not a "Semi", this was larger than your normal truck. Joel opened the door for me (1 point), and I literally climbed in the seat. The seat was a air ride seat, so it could be adjusted up and down, well the seat was all the way up and my feet didn't touch the floor. Now let me explain I am not short, I am 5'7", with a 31" inseam, sitting in the seat the toe of my size 9 foot could brush the floor if I worked at it. Surprisingly I was too shy too say "hey can I lower this?", so I just sat up there amongst the clouds.

Joel took me to Red Robin for dinner. We talked and I was surprised at how many things we agreed upon. There were a few awkward moments but we had a nice time. I remember a few of our topics we chatted about, but not many. I do remember telling him I did plan on leaving the next year for school, as no one close had my major, children's ministry. I thought it was best to be honest and let him know that I wouldn't be here in the fall.

After dinner, we headed to the Ice rink, some other friends were there. This point in the date I think we both relaxed a bit with others we knew around. We skated around for some time with each other chatting about whatever, then on occasion we would break off and skate with friends and chat with them. Then it was time to go Joel walked me to the truck and opened my door, he noticed that my seat was really high "oh you can push this button and the seat will lower". The date ended with possible plans to for a BBQ get together the next weekend.

Although the date was nice and he seemed nice, I remember thinking that "oh he's nice and I'd go out with him again, but I am not sure this will go anywhere", but as you can see your first instinct is not always correct.

Oh and to explain Joel's Dress Choice, He had been working outside all day and didn't think he had time to go home and clean up. He also thought was that if I saw him dressed like he was he would know the "real" him and not get any ideas that he was a really nice dresser or anything. Let me just say, for future dates, Joel did clean up and dress in clothes not covered in sawdust, grass and dirt.
