So we were planning on getting pregnant when we did, so no surprise there, but here a few things I was surprised about.
I thought he was a Girl: I was so sure that this mellow fellow was a little girl, we were calling him "she" in the womb. When I found a cute little denim skirt and blouse with matching diaper cover on clearance, I bought them. The ring thing you do with your hair and wedding ring over your belly, went in a circle, so that meant girl (and for Phil it was right about being boy, so why wouldn't it work) I absolutely loved his girl name 'Alice Enyunam'. So imagine my surprise when he was handed to me and I found out he was a boy. Although I have told people that I wanted ALL boys, when I wrapped my mind around a little girl I thought it would be fun. I must say Although I love My new little boy, I was a little disappointed that he was not a girl. The next day though a good friend came over and said, "This is a family that needs a bunch of boys". She is right, this family needs a bunch of boys and I am okay with not having a girl to dress up.
I thought he would Be small, but NOT THAT SMALL: I could feel that this baby was smaller than Phillip, and I measured smaller than when I was carrying Phillip (If you think that is actually possible, cause if you see my pictures, I already looked really small). So I thought that Thomas would come in at a few ounces smaller than Phillips 7lbs 14 oz, maybe in the low 7lbs, but I did not think that he would come under 7lbs. I was so surprised when they handed him to me, and he was so light. Talk about Muscle Memory, My muscles remember how it felt to hold Phillip for the first time, and Thomas was defiantly lighter. So when we finally weighed him (after he nursed for 30 minutes) He came in at a mere 6lbs 10oz, and 20 1/2 inches, so he was long and skinny. In fact a week after he was born, Joel and I were out and a checker at the grocery store commented about how small he was. She said "I had a daughter who was just barely 5lbs and he looks smaller", I told her he was almost 21 inches and she commented "Oh well my daughter was barely 17inches".
I thought He would EARLY: I carried Thomas Very Very Low, so low that at some points while pregnant, when he moved around, I really thought he was going to break my water and pop right out. I kept telling people weeks Before my due date, I think this one will be early. That was the worst thing I could have done. Because by the time my due date was here I was convinced it was never going to come out and I was going to be pregnant FOREVER. Well he finally came out 6 days late, but even then I was surprised. The day before I had been hanging out with my Sister in law, we had spent the day together and I had intended to bring Phil back in the next morning so I could go to my midwife appointment. I told her as I was leaving that night, Oh this baby isn't coming tonight. So the Next morning she called my house to see if I was just running late, only to find out that I was in Labor, We were both surprised!!
So there you have it. Three Ways this little guy has surprised Me. I can't wait too see all the other ways he will surprise me in the future!!
